LCC has received an application for a Local Event Day for the Lismore Local Government Area on 19 December 2023 to be known as Widjabul Wia-bal Day. This is in response to Widjabul Wia-bal’s native title application which was determined by consent on 19 December 2022.
A local event day is different to a public holiday. A declared local event day does not automatically mean employers in the locality are compelled to treat the day as a public holiday. Entitlements to paid leave or penalty rates will only arise where agreed to at the workplace level, usually in the form of an enterprise agreement or by contract.
Council will consider this matter at its 12 September 2023 meeting.
