About Janelle:

“JANELLE Saffin has been State Member for Lismore in New South Wales since March 2019. She was appointed NSW Minister for Small Business, Recovery and the North Coast on 17 March 2025.

Janelle previously was the NSW Parliamentary Secretary for Disaster Recovery.

She has also served as Federal Member for Page for two terms and as a member of the NSW Upper House.

Janelle enjoys a reputation as a strong advocate for her community, championing the Australian values of fairness, integrity, tolerance and understanding.

A lawyer and teacher, she has extensive experience in community programs, education, law, international development and governance.

Janelle’s advocacy for social justice and human rights extends from the local level to global settings.  She has worked for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), serving in high-level advisory roles.

Janelle has strong ties to the peoples of Timor-Leste and Myanmar. She served as senior political advisor to His Excellency Dr Jose Ramos-Horta while the Nobel Peace Laureate was Timor-Leste’s Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Prime Minister and President. She continues to be his Special Adviser.

Janelle’s deep engagement with Myanmar spans three decades. She has supported their struggle for democracy with her experience in policy, development and constitutional matters. She established the Australian Myanmar Parliament Friendship Group.

Janelle has been an Independent Director and Vice President of the United Nations Association of Australia and Board Member/Advisor to the Asia and the Pacific APMA Global Master of Human Rights. She currently sits on the Advisory Board CHEGA!

Locally, Janelle has established and led a number of organisations, driving policy reform and making a difference to people’s lives across regional and rural New South Wales, and further afield.

Janelle is an Adjunct Professor in law and justice at Southern Cross University. She is an SCU graduate as well and former SCU Council Member.”
